The 2023 Sparkling St. Laurent from Michael Cruse is a striking example of modern California sparkling wine. Crafted from the rare St. Laurent grape, this wine comes from Ricci Vineyard in the Carneros AVA of Sonoma. Located near San Pablo Bay, the site benefits from foggy mornings and cool maritime breezes. As a result, the fruit retains freshness and natural acidity. In addition, Haire clay loam soils contribute texture and a subtle mineral edge.
Michael Cruse has worked with Ricci Vineyard for many years. His low intervention approach defines this wine. The grapes are hand harvested and undergo a short maceration followed by a gentle sparkling press cycle. Fermentation starts naturally in stainless steel and continues in bottle. The wine then ages for 12 months on lees and is disgorged without dosage or added sulfur. Therefore, the result is a pure and direct expression of sparkling St. Laurent.
In the glass, this Carneros sparkling wine shows a pale pink color with lively bubbles. The nose opens with ripe strawberry, raspberry sorbet, and fresh watermelon. On the palate, the wine feels bright and energetic. Notes of kumquat and lemon zest come forward first. Then, a fine chalky texture adds structure and length. As a result, the wine remains light, fresh, and highly drinkable.
