The 2017 Patelin de Tablas from Tablas Creek Vineyard is a Syrah-driven Rhône red blend sourced from some of the finest vineyards across Paso Robles. Unlike the estate-only Côtes de Tablas, the Patelin draws fruit from four distinct growing regions, each chosen for quality and character. The result is a wine that captures the breadth and energy of Paso Robles Rhône winemaking in a single, expressive bottle.
A Multi-Region Blend with a Clear Identity
Tablas Creek builds the Patelin de Tablas around the dark fruit, mineral tension, and spice of Syrah. Three limestone-rich regions contribute structure and acidity: the warmer, higher-elevation Adelaida Hills near Tablas Creek itself, the cool coastal-influenced Templeton Gap, and the moderate, hilly El Pomar district. Additionally, the warmer Estrella District brings juicy, darkly fruited Syrah from sandy loam soils. Grenache adds brightness and freshness. Mourvèdre brings structure and meatiness. Counoise rounds out the blend with complexity and lift. All varieties fermented with native yeasts in a mix of upright oak fermenters and stainless steel tanks, then aged in wooden uprights before bottling in July 2018.
A Vintage Built on Contrast
The 2017 vintage ended a prolonged drought dramatically. Tablas Creek received 43 inches of rain, including its rainiest January on record. The wet soils delayed budbreak and produced one of the healthiest, most vigorous vineyards the estate had seen in years. The summer started cool, then two heat spikes in early July and late August accelerated ripening and built intensity. Consequently, the vintage delivers a compelling balance of concentration and freshness, with bright acidity framing powerful, vivid fruit.
Tasting Notes: Syrah-Driven, Layered, and Satisfying
On the nose, this Paso Robles Rhône blend opens with a lovely, very Syrah-driven profile: pine forest, pancetta, blackberry, and dried herbs. In the mouth, the wine turns juicier than the nose suggests, with smoky blackberry, licorice root, and crushed rock. Chalky tannins and flavors of black cherry and freshly turned earth emerge on the finish. The balance and substance here are notable. Drink now and over the next several years.
Strong Critical Recognition
Critics praised the 2017 Patelin de Tablas consistently across publications. Vinous awarded 91 points, highlighting its lithe and expressive character with elegantly layered raspberry, garrigue, and pepper notes. Wine Enthusiast awarded 92 points, praising its great core of black plum and dark berry. Furthermore, Wine Spectator awarded 91 points for its refined, harmonious profile. The Underground Wine Letter went further, awarding Outstanding Plus potential and noting its great underlying structure. At its price point, it stands among the most compelling value wines in Paso Robles.
Accords mets-vins et service
At the table, the 2017 Patelin de Tablas pairs beautifully with grilled meats, roasted lamb, sausage ragù, and root vegetable stews. It also works well alongside aged cheeses and charcuterie boards. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees Celsius. A short decant of 20 to 30 minutes opens up the full aromatic complexity.
