The 2022 Monkey Jacket from Cruse Wine Co. is a bold and expressive red blend that captures the unorthodox spirit of California winemaking. Crafted by sparkling wine pioneer Michael Cruse, this wine breaks conventions with flair, offering a playful, juicy, and textural experience.
The blend combines 27% Zinfandel, 26% Valdiguié, 22% Carignan, 19% Petite Sirah, and 6% Tannat. Grapes are sourced from organically farmed vineyards across Mendocino (75%) and Napa Valley (25%). Many vines are over 70 years old. Half of the fruit was fermented whole cluster in concrete, enhancing structure and lift. The wine aged in a mix of neutral barrels and concrete tanks before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.
In the glass, Monkey Jacket opens with vibrant aromas of strawberry jam, plum, and crushed raspberries, followed by hints of pepper and tobacco leaf. The palate is bright and energetic, with fine tannins and refreshing acidity. Despite its complexity, this wine remains irresistibly drinkable.
Best enjoyed slightly chilled, Monkey Jacket pairs beautifully with burgers, grilled vegetables, tacos, or even pizza night. It’s a go-to bottle for informal gatherings, delivering both character and charm.
Cruse wines are limited in production and highly sought after in the U.S. We are proud to offer this exclusive release to European wine lovers through americanwine.club.
