At americanwine.club, we proudly present the 2018 Esprit de Tablas from Tablas Creek Vineyard. This flagship red blend reflects the soul of California Rhône-style winemaking. Grown in the Adelaida District of Paso Robles on limestone soils, the wine expresses depth, balance, and a strong sense of place. The estate is certified organic and biodynamic, rooted in a transatlantic partnership between the Perrin family of Château de Beaucastel and importer Robert Haas.
The 2018 growing season began with late winter rains. These rains delayed budbreak, which allowed for a long and even ripening period. A short heat spike in mid-July added concentration without compromising freshness. As a result, this vintage achieved excellent balance between fruit, structure, and acidity.
The blend includes 40% Mourvèdre, 27% Syrah, 23% Grenache, and 10% Counoise. Each varietal fermented separately on native yeasts. The components were then blended and aged in large French oak foudres. No fining or filtration took place before bottling, preserving the wine’s natural texture and complexity.
On the nose, expect aromas of loamy redcurrant, smoked meat, plum, and leather. The palate follows with baked cherry, licorice, roasted herbs, and crushed stone. While rich, the wine remains vibrant. Bright acidity and polished tannins carry through a long and savory finish.
You can enjoy this wine now, but decanting for 30 to 60 minutes will enhance its expression. For food pairings, think braised lamb, duck breast, wild mushroom risotto, or a hearty lentil cassoulet. Serve at 16 to 18 °C.
Critics agree: 94 points (Vinous), 94 (Wine Enthusiast), 93 (Wine Advocate), 92 (Wine Spectator). A landmark vintage worth cellaring.
