The 2018 Mourvèdre from Tablas Creek Vineyard is a rare and focused single-varietal bottling from Paso Robles. Tablas Creek grows it on its 120-acre certified organic and biodynamic estate in the Adelaida District. Because the winery reserves most of its Mourvèdre for the flagship Esprit de Tablas, only the most characteristic lots reach this limited release. Just 640 cases exist. That scarcity makes it one of the most distinctive wines in the entire portfolio.
A Vintage Built for Intensity
The 2018 vintage delivered near-ideal conditions. Although rainfall reached only 70% of normal, the late rains delayed bud-break and extended the growing season. Cool weather dominated most of the year, then a six-week heat wave hit in July and early August. Fortunately, temperatures moderated before harvest. The team picked without stress, and the fruit developed intense flavors alongside excellent balancing acidity.
Crafted with Patience in the CellarThe team destemmed the grapes and fermented them with native yeasts in large wooden tanks. After three weeks, the wine moved to 1,200-gallon French oak foudres. There it completed fermentation. The lots blended in spring 2019, aged for an additional year in foudre, and bottled in May 2020. This unhurried approach preserves purity and transparency. As a result, the wine reflects the Tablas Creek style with exceptional clarity.
Tasting Notes: Depth, Spice, and Signature Mourvèdre Character
On the nose, this Paso Robles Mourvèdre opens with a vibrant, brambly character: boysenberry, plum, licorice, and a hint of new leather. In the mouth, it feels substantial without being heavy. Flavors of red currant, loam, and the grape’s signature meat drippings emerge with air. On the finish, sweet spices and dusty tannins linger invitingly. Drink now or cellar confidently for up to 15 years.
Food Pairings and Serving
At the table, this Paso Robles Mourvèdre pairs beautifully with braised short ribs, richly flavored stews, duck leg confit, and pork chops with fruit reduction. It also works well alongside Asian preparations of red meat and bittersweet chocolate desserts. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees Celsius. Decant when young to allow the aromatics to fully open up.
