2018 Chateau Montelena Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
At americanwine.club, we are proud to offer the 2018 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from Chateau Montelena—one of California’s most iconic producers. Known globally for its historic win at the 1976 Judgment of Paris, Chateau Montelena helped put Napa Valley on the world wine map. While the Chardonnay stole the spotlight back then, the estate’s dedication to powerful, cellar-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon has remained at its core.
A Vintage of Balance and Depth
The 2018 growing season in Napa Valley delivered near-perfect conditions. A wet winter and mild spring supported healthy vine growth, while the cool summer allowed the fruit to ripen gradually. This resulted in Cabernet grapes with intense flavor, balanced sugar, and firm natural acidity—ideal for crafting age-worthy wine.
Winemaking and Aging
Montelena fermented this wine in stainless steel to preserve purity and structure. It then matured for 22 months in French oak barrels, with only a small percentage of new oak. This approach enhances depth without masking the vibrant fruit. The final result is both structured and refined, with the hallmark elegance of Napa’s northern valley floor.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows deep garnet hues. Aromas include black cherry, cassis, dried violet, cedar, cocoa, and graphite. On the palate, it unfolds in layers: blackcurrant, espresso, baking spices, and a subtle herbal edge. The tannins are firm yet polished, balanced by fresh acidity and a persistent, savory finish.
Food Pairing and Cellaring
This is a wine for the long haul. While delicious now with 30 minutes of decanting, it will evolve beautifully over the next 10–15 years. Enjoy with grilled ribeye, braised short ribs, or aged cheddar for a perfect match.
