Chateau Montelena Napa Valley Chardonnay 2021
A legendary estate, an iconic white.
The 2021 Napa Valley Chardonnay from Chateau Montelena is a graceful, age-worthy white wine from one of California’s most storied producers. This historic estate rose to global fame after its 1973 Chardonnay triumphed over top Burgundies in the legendary 1976 Judgment of Paris. While that moment made headlines, Montelena has continued to refine its craft with quiet confidence. The 2021 vintage proves that legacy still matters.
Grown in cool-climate vineyard sites across Napa Valley, this Chardonnay reflects both terroir and tradition. The wine was made from 100% estate-grown Chardonnay, fermented and aged for ten months in French oak barrels. Importantly, the oak is used with restraint — just enough to bring texture and depth without overwhelming the wine’s natural brightness.
On the nose, delicate aromas of orange blossom, green apple, and white peach lead the way. Hints of chamomile, wet stone, and subtle toast follow. The palate is vibrant yet composed. Citrus and orchard fruit meet chalky minerality and soft notes of lemon curd and crème brûlée. Despite the layered flavors, the wine feels fresh and clean, thanks to its crisp acidity and focused structure.
This is a Chardonnay built to evolve. While it drinks beautifully today, it will reward patient cellaring for 5 to 10 years. Over time, expect added complexity and a deepening of its already elegant profile.
Pair it with classic dishes such as oysters, poached chicken, or linguine with clams. It also shines next to rich cheeses or creamy risottos. Serve chilled at 10–12 °C for best expression.
